Helsingborg - the Pearl of Öresund

In popular speech, Helsingborg is known as the Pearl of the Øresund. This scenic seaside town (ca 94,000 inhabitants) in southern Sweden strikes with its cordial and continental atmosphere. Helsingborg has some of the best restaurants in the country, it has been awarded for having best music life; and its landmark and cultural centre is the thriving Dunkers Kulturhus (Dunker’s Cultural Centre). The city centre tempts shoppers and strollers into the oldest pedestrian street in Sweden – Kullagatan.

Helsingborg has a strong reputation of offering the best dining in entire Sweden. Some of Scandinavia’s best renowned chefs work in town’s restaurants; naturally, you will find a wide range of less expensive restaurants and bars here, too, and the food will still be great.

The town hosts several historical sites (do not miss the gothic St. Mary's Church and its surroundings or romantic Kärnan!) and has great urban beaches, as well as beautiful gardens.
By the waterfront, in the former industrial dock area, there is today a modern residential area, with an esplanade, plenty of restaurants, coffee bars, and a marina.

Five kilometres north of Helsingborg there is a beautiful former royal residence Sofiero Palace, famous for its garden, entertainment, and an excellent restaurant.

The gateway

Helsingborg is one of the gateways to Sweden, and many Swedes still choose this route to the continent instead of heading for Öresund Bridge. Frequent ferry traffic to Danish Elsinore (Helsingør) and the beautiful costal road to Copenhagen make the journey both pleasant and smooth. The 20-minutes long journey across the Sound (Øresund) treats with a great view over the charming Elsinore and the Kronborg Castle - Hamlet’s “home”.
